The Others
I don’t want to write too mighty because I don’t want to spoil the surprises for the spectators, but I highly recommend this movie if you like an atmospheric, spooky, lustrous, highly suspenseful, fascinating, beautifully crafted, acted movie with a yarn that will leave you quite amazed, happy, and wanting to peruse it again. Trust me, this is not your typical ghost sage. Spanish director Amenabar should gather the Oscar for this thrilling thriller. It’s sparkling and even spicy. I was not expecting to watch a film in the same vein as The Sixth Sense that’s better than The Sixth Sense. To exhaust a Hollywood equation it’s The Sixth Sense meets Turn of the Screw. Nicole Kidman is awesome. The rest of the cast is expedient. The fog-drenched cinematography adds the moral touch of mystery and fright. And procure ready for one of the scariest quick-cuts in movie history when you least request it! Have fun!
This movie has a number of levels, many of which are not immediately apparent because of the top-notch acting, arrive perfect casting and magnificent cinematography. On the artistic level the movie will appeal more to artists and writers, and to those who luxuriate in a well crafted place and a surprise ending.
On another level, though, this movie will inspire a self examination of how one perceives realities. It does this by exposing the filters and assumptions that we all employ when observing and mentally correlating those observations with our knowledge of fact into our realities. It also has an definite message about coexistence and acceptance.
Regardless of whether or not one believes in the supernatural, the myth and the ending will be completely unexpected for most who see this movie. The many clues wrapped in foreshadowing and other location devices will not fabricate sense until the slay, but if you carefully inquire them a day or so after watching this movie you’ll have some alive to insights into your hold new space of filters and assumptions that you expend daily.

There are other levels and messages within this movie that will surface days or weeks after watching it, such as the scheme the female characters are portrayed as more proactive, central figures than the male characters. The movie also challenges religious beliefs in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. I am not positive if this is yet another subtle layer of the spot or if it reflects the views and biases of the writers and director – but these elements are there.

If you like titanic dialog and a masterful account with an attractive status that is presented with lovely visuals then you’ll appreciate this movie on an artistic level. If you luxuriate in mental challenges and subtlety that is presented with social and cogitative challenges you’ll worship this movie on a deeper level.

Watch Quantum of Solace Online
Some reviewers and fans of the Bond films have complained that this film is a lesser disaster in the series and pales in comparison to “Casino Royale”. They have missed something essential in their assessment of the film. When Dominic Green says to Bond that he and Camille Montez have something in accepted, that they are both “Damaged goods” he has clearly establish before the audience the crux of the film that is “Quantum of Solace”.
The film picks up only minutes after the ruin of “Casino Royale” and we are presented with a very damaged and changed James Bond. As revealed in the first film by Vesper Lynd’s assessment of him upon their first meeting on the express, James Bond is a man who came up from humble beginnings and was given a privileged education but never allowed to forget his shameful origins. This has made him a very guarded loner with a chip on his shoulder, a perfect candidate for recruitment by MI6. In his words to her later on in the film, Vesper has “stripped me of my armor.” But by the slay of that film he is a man scarred by the death of his treasure, the armor is serve on never to be penetrated again. He is now becoming the Bond of yarn and a man crooked on revenge.

So in “Quantum” there is no reason for the former fashioned quips or grand humor in this man. Yet if you pay attention the character of James Bond as played by the incomparable Daniel Craig he lets us stare that there are cracks in the armor. Something of a human heart aloof exists in him. This is played out in the scene after the plane shatter where Camille asks him about his past. Craig shows it in his eyes in the most righteous example of his layered and subtle acting style. Craig builds and molds a deeper, darker more complex Bond than we have ever seen before, a character more honest to the books than in previous incarnations of Bond.
The action in the film is superlative and stylish. The opening car shuffle is indeed a nail biter only surpassed by the Sienna roam moments later. This too is then topped by the DC10 aerial battle towards the waste of the film. The stunts are breathtaking and propel the film at top notch run. But perhaps the most graceful and modern sequence is the gun fight in the restaurant at the Opera house. This is played without sound achieve as the collect of “Tosca” commands the ear and heightens the emotion of the scene. This is inspired and intelligent film making taking in yarn all aspects of editing, cinematography, bag, and acting. And since I mentioned music I cannot leave out the extraordinary savory accumulate by David Arnold who has infused his Bond scores with the grand need taste of John Barry. He captures the ravishing Barry sound and builds brilliantly upon it.
All the principle players give superlative performances. Judi Dench swear attention as she always has as “M”. Giancarlo Giannini redeems himself and is truly touching as Mathis. Mathieu Amalic is appropriately slithery and devious as the villain Green. As Agent Fields, Miss Gemma Arterton brings a light and fun light to the film. Finally in the role of Camille Olga Kurylenko holds her hold opposite Daniel Craig. This is no mean feat and she is astounding, athletic and touching in the film.
In the waste Bond does accumulate a quantum of solace and ends the film in a telling design. A itsy-bitsy gesture that lets us know he is now involving on but not without a tinge of sadness. This sparkling black ending is a refreshing and appealing plot to waste a Bond film.

“Quantum of Solace” is a speedily paced film that demands attention to the cramped details and respect for superlative performances by all eager from the director Marc Forster to the entire cast and crew.
“Quantum of Solace,” the latest James Bond film and the second featuring Daniel Craig has its flaws, but is tranquil a elegant spectacular film. The series is in fat retooling mode, hardly recognizable when compared to the films of Sean Connery and Roger Moore. While closer to the darker sides of Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan’s Bonds, it does have more in celebrated with the common Jason Bourne series starring Matt Damon, which is not a dreadful thing.
This Bond pickes up accurate after the waste of Casino Royale, as Bond takes a prisoner for interrogation to M, again played by Dame Judy Dench. The interrogation and subsequent events uncovers a global conspiracy named Quantum, with members of prominence and power, including an admired environmentalist who is obviously up to no suitable. The rest of the film plays out as Bond races to bag out and foil the villain’s intention, partnered with a revenge-minded woman, played by Olga Kurylenko.
The negatives – This film is powerful shorter than most Bond films, which isn’t advantageous or poor by itself, but the film plays in parts like it had a bit too remarkable sever out, most notably the scenes between Bond and Strawberry Fields, a female agent played by Gemma Arterton. Like many women, she tries to resist Bond’s charms to no avail, but as events unfold, it is sure that Fields and Bond had quite a bit of time together, which is not reflected in the final gash. The villain, played by Mathieu Almaric, does not whisper powerful in the device of difficulty or menace. He doesn’t need to be the kind of kitschy, cartoonish villain that the obsolete Bond films are noted for, but he should at least raise the audiences hackles, but he does not. Finally, the tension between Bond and M is understandable, but every film shouldn’t have Bond being stripped of his license and having him act any more of a free agent than he already does. It would be more realistic to point to the continued development of their relationship with disagreements and dialogue rather than rely on a situation intention that has been ragged numerous times in the Bond series.
The positives, which far outweigh the negatives – Daniel Craig continues to display that his Bond is like no other. His Bond is nuanced, alarmed, and truly, truly hazardous. This Bond seems like someone who has a license to raze and is more suitable to spend it than any other Bond build Dalton’s Bond. His acting talent gives Bond the gravitas and suitable humor that provides a balanced character. The action scenes have been updated and are breathtaking, and the potential for future films seem limitedless.
Quantum of Solace bodes well for the future of the series since even though it is flawed, it is at the same time a very great film.

Pathfinder
The movie going audience these days is not only sometimes fickle, but it is also scandalous. My wife and I saw pathfinder, and after some of the dreadful criticizing reviews I heard I was bracing for a possibly abominable film. How surprised I was! Pathfinder was a glowing film. If you grew up in the 1970’s and 80’s and like gritty films with hard action, and minimalist approaches, this pure and simple legend of survival will probably be a breath of unusual air for you (it was for me) and a chance to assume a smash away from many of today’s bloated, special effects laden blockbusters that are radiant for what they are but really don’t teach worthy in the draw of gritty harsh action. Is it perfect? No. But it’s a grim myth that is meaningful, attractive, and worth seeing.

The tale is not clichéd and predictable in any more of a plan than anything else is these days. It’s simple, decent, and gets the job done of being racy. Sometimes I was surprised, sometimes not, but always entertained. My stomach unprejudiced turns at the people who disfavor this film but go on to defend these bloated Hollywood CGI spectacles. The acting is attractive, even qualified in some places (Carl Urban did a glorious job with what he had to work with and shows he is very great) . Visuals are stout and sometimes breathtaking, filming style and editing is pleasing (minimalist, nothing too treasure, does not have a zoom or tilt addicted camera operator and does not survey like an MTV video), dialog could have mature some work perhaps, but dialog isn’t the focus of this SURVIVAL film and it works well enough. The Vikings lines are subtitled, and the Native Americans unbiased lisp a simple English. Was this the best choice? Probably, though it may not be satisfying for some. Otherwise the whole film would have been subtitled and I reflect the director was sparkling enough to realize that this film was not offering that level of entertainment. This is not trying to be Apocalypto. The main couple has a decent enough chemistry more qualified to the times portrayed and the violence they are in the middle of suffering then some of today’s fresh bloated blockbusters.
My one complain is that there is certainly a level of historical inaccuracy going on here, and the Vikings capture the brunt of it. But the film is not supposed to be a work of fact and somebody has to be the villains. As far as villains go however, they certainly are some mean dudes in this film! All in all, everything that happened, the acting, the editing, the pacing, everything was understandable and done well and made this into an inviting film of a myth of pure survival with some extra elements thrown in for generous measure. If you’re a nit picker, quit away from this film. If not, and the subject matter appeals to you, give it a try. I’m overjoyed I did, and I’m looking forward to buying this on DVD.

The Pathfinder is about a Norse/Viking boy around twelve years conventional who was abandoned or shipped wrecked on the flee of (I’m guessing Canada) where an young Indian woman finds him and adopts him into the tribe. He, of course, is not common by the tribe and has to fight to score recognition.
Without giving too worthy, away this proceed is burly of action. Combining elements of Conan the Barbarian – Collector’s Edition,Beowulf (Unrated Director’s Slice), ]]Rambo First Blood Share II, [[ASIN:B00005JPLW 300 (Two-Disc Special Edition), and Jeremiah Johnson. Whew, a grand movie for action movie fans.

Finally I can earn rid of those tapes.
Quinn Mallory ( Jerry O Connel) is trying to perform an anti-gravity diagram and accidentally creates a diagram that opens up a portal. His physics professor Maximillian P. Arturo (John Rhys-Davies), and his girlfriend Wade Wells (Sabrina Lloyd) want to accompany Quinn through the portal to spy where it leads. A washed up singer named Rembrant Brown (Cleavant Derricks) is also accidentally dragged along for the swagger, when he is walking occupy and sucked through the portal with them. Quinn and the rest of the group “go” to another dimension of earth. The Sliders soon realize that they would mighty rather return help to their occupy dimension, but things are not that easy. Once you have entered through the portal, you have to retain traveling to different dimensions of earth to accept the good one that will lead befriend home. Each episode deals with Quinn, Professor Arturo, Wade, and Rembrant exploring each dimension to secure their plot attend to their absorb dimension. Unfortunately, once the Sliders have entered a particular dimension, there is only a minute amount of time to reopen the portal, and there are only a few grasp places within each dimension they can do it from. Finding the accurate state to inaugurate the portal is often a challenge to the group because each dimension is different than their maintain, and can be life threatening at times.
I have heard people often refer to Sliders as a rip off of Quantum Leap. While Quantum Leap was a better exhibit, Sliders is completely different. Quinn, Professor Arturo, Wade, and Rembrant are not traveling through time. They are traveling through other dimensions of earth that differ from their beget. This is what makes the expose so enormous, because it is very inviting to peep how each dimension will be different than the next. The prove also offers tons of suspense. There is a “hurry against the clock” type feel due to the fact that the group only has a tiny amount of time to secure one of the few places within the dimension they can “sail” from. Jerry O Connel and the rest of the cast were ample in their roles, and it is their performances that beget the display so titillating, especially the performance given from Cleavant Derricks as Rembrant Brown. The funniest thing about his character, is that Rembrant never asked to go with them, and was dragged along accidentally. So he often complains about each residence which usually provides for a lot of laughs.
Unfortunately, Sliders did not manage to finish mountainous for the entire urge of the prove. I have to agree with many of the fans and say that the indicate went seriously downhill during season three when Professor Arturo left the indicate. Seasons four and five would become even worse, because the demonstrate left FOX to air on the Sci-Fi channel, and by the raze of the display, Rembrant was the only novel character left. However, the first two seasons of Sliders are what effect the explain disagreeable among the top of any television demonstrate in the sci-fi genre. The best thing about this DVD package, is the fact that you bag the two best seasons of the expose in one plot. While it is a shame that the extras are somewhat slight, this position is worth owning objective for the episodes themselves.
A solid 5 stars…

Streaming The Beast of Yucca Flats Online
Cool title, dapper screen, Tor, looks like a winner, apt? Don’t be fooled. I treasure Robot Monster, Kronos, Broad Man (BTW, why is this not on DVD? ), etc., and truly bear that Ed Wood Jr. is a far grand filmmaker to Lucas, Speilberg, et al., but even for a fan of this kind of thing, this one is excruciating. By all means seize it for the camouflage so friends will believe you’re outre hip or whatever, but do not actually recognize it or you will disfavor yourself. I’m writing this to encourage people. Ignore at your beget risk!
The theatrical trailer proclaims that this 1961 schlock-fest was “filmed ENTIRELY on region in Yucca Flats!” How’s that for an endorsement? Actually, the trailer is far reliable to this uninteresting attempt at Z-grade science-fiction, with no synchronized dialogue but more voiceover narration than any movie in history. “The Beast of Yucca Flats” does not belong in the “so terrible it’s comical” category – it’s impartial wearisome poor. Recommended only to fans of Tor Johnson.

This review rating is not for the voice of the movie itself, but for the quality of the HD DVD transfer.

This is one of the best titles for record quality to arrive out so far in the HD DVD format. The standard DVD release was large for characterize quality, so I was mad to ogle what this one is like in the HD DVD format. Characterize quality is very impressive. The textures of the period clothing in the film really stand out. Blacks are very dim, and the movie has colossal shadow detail.
The sound quality is also a dramatic improvement over the standard DVD. While there is no Dolby Apt HD sound, the Dolby Digital plus soundtrack is huge.
In the middle of a summer of poor sequels “Seabiscuit” came along as a bit of current air. No other film this year thus far has been filled with such emotion, beauty, and heart. “Seabiscuit” is a rare gem of a film. It does not rely on special-effects, explosions, or cheap romances. The beauty of this film is that it is simply about the pure heart of a horse and the people around him.
Writer/Director Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Sizable) adapted Laura Hillenbrand’s painstakingly researched bestseller into an fabulous script. The record itself is so astonishing that, if it hadn’t happened, wouldn’t have been remotely plausible as a film. If Seabiscuit wasn’t a accurate horse, I would have taken one recognize at this film and said “Ridiculous! Like that could really happen!” The fact that the anecdote is legal makes “Seabiscuit” an even more glowing and emotional jog.

Tobey Maguire plays Red Pollard, a half-blind, oversized jockey who was abandoned by his family as a child and now rides the worst horses at the worst races. Chris Cooper plays Tom Smith, an traditional fashioned horse trainer who prefers the company of a horse to that of a person who one day finds a barbed wire fence and cars in the middle of his wilderness homeland. Jeff Bridges plays Charles Howard, a self-invented millionaire dealing with the loss of his only son. These three “broken” men and a banged up slight racehorse unite together and beat wonderful odds to become an inspiration to a nation that isn’t in the best shape itself.
Everything in this film is astounding. From the great racing scenes to Randy Newman’s haunting pick up, “Seabiscuit” is one film you won’t want to miss. Please excuse my vagueness, I can’t assign into words how fabulous this film is (as you can probably issue from this sinister review) . I am fair so in terror that words hurry me!

Watch Ball of Fire Movie Online
I never had the opportunity to notice this classic film, neither on tv, nor on vhs format….Having watched so many times Capra’s “Meet John Doe”, also starring Cooper and Stanwyck, which I care for….I had always wanted to inspect this second and last pairing of this unbelievable cover couple.
When I bought my dvd player, three years ago, this one was of the first movies I wanted to seize….but when I tried to, the dvd edition was already out of stock or out of print….and sadly for us, this HBO 1998 dvd edition, is being sold at very high prices at Internet Stores. So… I had lost all hopes when I had the luck of finding it at a very convenient mark in an unknown little store in Raleigh, North Carolina, while on vacation there.
This incredible, classic comedy…deserved the long wait….’cos Stanwyck is really wonderful as cabaret stripper and singer Sugarpuss O’Shea, at first using Gary Cooper for her possess selfish purposes, but in the process (not unexpectedly), falling for his naive, clumsy Professor Potts (“Pottsy” for her) .
Buy,Download, Or Stream Ball of Fire! Click Here
By the blueprint, professor Potts works on an encyclopedia project with seven fellow experts, on different areas of knowledge, all of them bachelors or widowers, living by themselves in a great house…with the only female presence of the elderly housekeeper, Miss Bragg (played by Kathleen Howard), who doesn’t live there (she wouldn’t dare to!!) .
While researching more information on modern slang (for their encyclopedia project), Cooper meets Stanwyck at a nightclub, where she sings with legendary Gene Krupa! (nothing less!!) immediately trying to persuade her to meet him at his home (with other fellow “users” of slang: the garbage man, the newspaper boy et al), in order to try win all of the existing slang words into the encyclopedia.
His seven fellow -much older than Cooper- co-workers and professors, are sort of like the seven dwarfs kind of characters, trying to play matchmaker between sexy-woman-of-the world Sugarpuss O’Shea and reluctant, prudish Professor Bertram Potts. Some of them are played by the best of character actors: Richard Haydn (his debut on veil), S.Z. Sakall, Henry Travers, Oscar Homolka, Tully Marshal, et al.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Ball of Fire! Click Here
Also, mighty performances by Dana Andrews (as Stanwyck’s underworld boyfriend) and Dan Duryea, as one of his “boys”.
Hilarious scenes, very comic moments and witty dialogue, thanks to a titanic script by the Charles Brackett-Billy Wilder team, and Howard Hawks’ deft direction.
The dvd edition is beneficial, stunning crisp and tantalizing…featuring the modern mono audio and a remastered-stereophonic one.
1941 was an capable year for both actors, besides this one and “Meet John Doe”, Stanwyck starred in the very, very humorous Preston Sturges’ movie “The Lady Eve”, with Henry Fonda, and Cooper starred in Hawks’ “Sergeant York”, and Oscar winning role.
This one was remade in 1948 by Hawks, as “A Song is Born” with Danny Kaye and Virginia Mayo, a amusing movie, but not up to the modern.
This retelling of the SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS was actually based on a script that Billy Wilder wrote before immigrating to the United States from Germany, but it was only after the success of the Disney version that a seek information from was created for it. The enormously versatile Howard Hawks (quite literally the most versatile director in film history, the only director to have mastered and/or created five or six genres) took the script and turned it into one of the last gargantuan pre-WW II comedies. The tale is simple: a group of monkish scholars living together in Original York City are writing an encyclopedia. One of them is writing about slang, but being uncommon with contemporary argot begins research his topic by talking to people outside his normal range of acquaintance. He runs into gangster moll Sugarpuss O’Shea, who takes advantage of the scholars to fade in with them in order to sprint the police, who want to talk to her to implicate her guy Joe Lilac. While hardly Snow White, she certainly managed to hurry up their lives.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Ball of Fire! Click Here
The film is made fabulous by a number of things: Wilder’s clever script, Hawks typically deft direction, a solid performance by Gary Cooper, but most of all by a scintillating job by the overwhelmingly alluring Barbara Stanwyck and a stellar collection of old character actors playing the seven dwarves. All the latter are astronomical, but special mention has to be made of Richard Haydn (who excells even beside the others, with his astonishing overpronounciation of everyday words), Oskar Homolka, and S.Z. Sakall. There are few more scrumptious collections of character actors in any Hollywood comedy. I personally win Barbara Stanwyck to any other actress in Hollywood history. She possessed an emotional immediacy that no other actress could approximate, and while her skills were perhaps a tad below those of someone like Katherine Hepburn, the latter never managed to match her fire and passion. And she is so sexy! I grew up watching Stanwyck on THE Mammoth VALLEY, so when I first started seeing her ample roles from the thirties, forties, and fifties, I was absolutely frightened at how sexy she could be. She was stunning, yes, but sexier than she was glorious. And she was never sexier than she was here, with the exception of her role the same year in THE LADY EVE.
Another reason to spy this film is the appearance of Gene Krupa in the early nightclub sequence. Krupa had, of course, been with Benny Goodman throughout the thirties, so this was very early in his career as leader of his possess band.

Perhaps if I had stumbled over this film as a rental first instead of buying it outright peer unseen, effect modern at Best Bewitch I might feel more ample disposed towards it. “WTF? ” you are no doubt saying at this point. “You’ve given it 4 stars and you’re saying that you don’t like the film? ” Well yeah, kinda sorta. I made the mistake of buying it on impulse based on the rave reviews on the screen, the blurb on the encourage, and some camouflage art that made it peep like the greatest thing since RE-ANIMATOR, Rotten Insensible 2, and ARMY OF DARKNESS. And I can’t afford to throw my money away like that, but I took the chance anyway. Needless to say the film didn’t suppose what I had been expecting/hoping for, which was something along the lines of a myth built around a character like the one John Ratzenberger (Cliff Clavin from CHEERS) played in HOUSE 2. You know, the electrician who is also an “adventurer” on the side? He takes one survey inside the walls of the house and drawls matter of factly, “Yeah, it looks like you have some sort of alternate universe in there.” Of course I know better than to go into any film with preconceived notions like that, but in this case my mind impartial ran away with me and I couldn’t assist it.

The film stars Robert Englund in one of his best performances in ages as a night school science teacher, Professor Crowley, who has in his class our title character Jack Brooks. Now Jack (played by Trevor Mathews who also co-wrote the memoir on which the screenplay is based) is honest loaded with History. It seems at a very tender age he witnessed his whole family’s slaughter at the claws and fangs of some sort of man/monster while they were out camping in the woods. The only thing that saved small Jack’s life was the fact that he ran. Running distress up taking control of the rest of his life. He ran from all of the distinguished things in life only to have his pent up rage at his contain perceived cowardice erupt at unexpected moments. Anyhoo, one night after class the good professor asks Jack (a plumber by trade) if he could possibly halt by his house and succor him with a plight he’s having with his pipes. (Fetch your minds out of the gutter, that’s not the kind of pipes I meant.) Jack’s got nothing better to do, so that very night he checks it out. It seems simple enough at first, but isn’t that the blueprint it is with every plumbing plight? Before you know it all matter of disgusting matter is hitting the fan and Jack has to order a unique gasket and reach help in a couple of days. But by then it will be too behind! For no sooner has he left than than a scandalous ooze seeps from the ground and its fumes initiate turn the sweet ol’ professor into a meat craving monster!
This flick has an abominable lot going for it. For one thing there is (as far as I can boom) absolutely no CGI anywhere! Everything is done the advantageous venerable fashioned way–with prosthetics, puppets, and men in monster suits. Professor Crowley literally erupts into a tentacled creature from hell that sucks the life out its victims and turns them into flesh eating beasts themselves. MONSTER SLAYER is, as it claims to be, a tribute to some of the best flicks from the 1980s, but yet it fair doesn’t do it for me. The humor it claims to have simply isn’t there for one thing, and for me that is a very, very titanic point indeed. The 1980s was the Golden Age of panic comedy and a stout fragment of the appeal of those flix WAS the humor, whether it was the comic wit of RE-ANIMATOR or the “splat-shtick” arrive of Sam Raimi in Wrong Wearisome 2. And what’s worse JACK BROOKS is a very bland hero! I believe the role practically screams for someone who can recount an ordinary everyday man and then rip away all that blandness and channel the laughable book spirit of Bruce Campbell when the place calls for it!

I don’t know, I unprejudiced don’t know. Perhaps when I eye this film again in a few months all the incredible parts, the venerable school effects and so forth, will triumph over my disappointment. That’s why I’ve given it 4 stars instead of 3. Perhaps they intend to create a series out of this character. That has some titanic possibilities. Oh no! Don’t open thinking about what COULD be again, it will only lead to disappointment.
Do you detest CGI??
Jack Brooks does.
Do you miss the days of corn syrup, latex, and paper-mache’??
Jack Brooks determined does.
Not only is Jack Brooks whipping monster arse,
cracking their jaws in half & taking their horrid names,
but he’s doing it old-school style.
Jack Brooks likes the old-school.
Plenty of monsters there.
Plenty of monsters, but not 1 Computer Generated Image in peek.
But……(there’s always a but)
Jack Brooks has a bit of an nettle jam.
One he’s having grief controling.
Ok so it’s a major enrage quandary.
But can you blame the guy?!?!
His family was killed by a forest troll when he was unprejudiced a boy.
A helpless boy who stood by unable to attend.
Now Jack Brooks has a psychiatrist.
A partiularly useless one.
One who might need to gather punched in the face.
And then there’s school to concern about too.
Which is hard enough in itself,
without having to deal with a teacher mutating into Krueger The Hutt.
Yeah it’s a hard life for Jack Brooks,
but a monster slayers gotta do what a monster slayers gotta do.
Ok seriously though,
You’re gonna care for this movie.
It has honorable character development brought to life by a substantial cast.
It has barrels of black-comedy laughs.
And lots of Non-CGI monsters. (remember those?? )
I went into this one thinking it was going to be as lame as a afraid sloth.
But boy was I pleasantly suprised!!!
You’ve made me a believer Jack.
Now I’d like to inspect Mr. Brooks lift on monsters that exist in other movies.
Tremors, Critters, Vampires, Sleepwalkers, whatever!!
MORAL OF THE STORY:
So many monsters. So microscopic time.
OR
Anger Management is the ability to destroy 2 monsters at once.

Marty
I fair noticed that a scene is missing from the DVD that was in my previous VHS version. The scene that I am refering to is true after Marty takes Clara home there is a short scene where she tells her parents about her date and how glad she is. This scene lasted about a little or two. I don’t know what’s improper with MGM lately. They forgot to include the recent subtitles in “Spinal Tap” they butchered half the “Bond” films with either missing scenes or non existent subtitles and now this. I contemplate we as consumers deserve better than this. We’ve had to endure MGM’s blunders for far too long. Let them know that you’re not satisified at all with the quality of their DVD’s.
Written by the gifted Paddy Chayefsky, this is a memorable film, deftly directed by Delbert Mann. That it has a stage-like, theatrical feel to it is not surprising, considering that it was first a made-for-television play that was later augmented for the silver mask. This element of theatricality, however, does not detract in the least from this gritty, thematically complex film.
Ernest Borgnine plays the role of Marty Piletti, a stocky, thirty-four year frail, lonely Italian butcher living at home in the Bronx with his mother. He is the last of the Piletti brood collected in the nest. Physically unattractive and a bit doltish, he is a socially awkward, lumbering lummox of internal distress and angst. His mother wants him to find married, or so she thinks, until the reality of what such might ultimately mean for her sinks in. She takes her cue from her sister, Marty’s Aunt Catherine, who is living with her son and daughter-in-law and making their lives hell. Consequently, she is going to recede in with Marty and his mother.
Marty spends most of his spare time with his friend Angie, as well as with a bunch of other losers. Unloved, unmarried, and unable to find a date, Marty has all but given up on finding Miss Factual, when he meets a twenty-nine year former high school teacher, also from the Bronx, Clara Snyder (Betsy Blair), at the noted Stardust Ballroom. Clara, a well educated, nice plain-Jane, is there as section of a pity double date arranged by her brother-in-law. Unfortunately, her date turns out to be a total cad who unceremoniously tries to fob her off on anyone he can, so that he can gather some action going with a hot babe he knows. Marty feels Clara’s afflict, so he asks her to dance, not quick-witted that he is meeting his feminine counterpart and soul-mate.

As the film peels the layers from Marty, the viewer meets the sensitive, kind man who lives within the unattractive exterior. The viewer really gets to feel his hurt, as well as that of some of the other characters in the film. One senses the feelings of alienation and loneliness in Clara, as she is dumped by her caddish date. One senses the horror that Mrs. Piletti has at the reality of what Marty’s getting married might mean for her. Aunt Catherine’s ouster from her son’s home, as the older, unwanted woman with few options in life, also makes an impact on the viewer. The angst of Aunt Catherine’s son at having to carve to his wife, rather than to his mother, is also palpable, as is that of Angie at the concept of the possibility of no longer having Marty around to section his contain social isolation.
The themes in this film, such as loneliness, isolation, alienation, and fright are all themes tranquil relevant today. The only genuine anachronistic mark is struck by the fact that Mrs. Piletti and Aunt Catherine both appear to be in their behind sixties or early seventies, but I found to my complete surprise that Aunt Catherine is supposed to be fifty-six, and Mrs. Piletti is her younger sister! Trust me when I say that, nowadays, women in their fifties do not eye like that.
All in all, this is an expedient film. Those who enjoyed this film should also see out another Paddy Chayefsky film, “The Catered Affair”, starring Bette Davis and Ernest Borgnine, which is a bitter sweet film about another Bronx family.

Streaming I Fidanzati – Criterion Collection Online
I had never even heard of Olmi before getting this film, which is outlandish since I’ve been exposed to many other italian postwar directors. Therefore, I FIDANZATI (The Fiances, or The Engaged) came as a complete surprise to me. The storyline, sometimes boring and wonderfully hypnotic in places, centers around the life of a construction worker who takes a job in Sicily and moves away from his fiance in northern Italy. It’s the classic romantic “abscence makes the heart grow fonder” storyline that is usually trite and banal. But somehow, amazingly, Olmi manages to pull it off, mainly through the titanic performances of the two leads and the bright editing towards the film’s conclusion, where they read letters and thoughts to one another in a plan that distorts past, indicate, and future. Highly recommended, as is Criterion’s unique editon of Olmi’s IL POSTO.
Criterion provide an 18 exiguous interview with Olmi, recorded in 2002, and the impart and charming director provides insight into the genesis of his film – the industrialisation and economic voice in Italy in the 60’s saw an upheaval in extinct customs and family life, especially in the awful agricultural areas, such as powerful of Sicily (where section of the film is place) ; in the legend this backdrop is counterpoised against the personal changes wrought upon a couple, separated by these circumstances. They open in stubborn silence and ruin in a heart-warming blossoming of whisper expression of their emotions and aspirations – the change sweeping through the nation has had its achieve upon them.

Olmi speaks of his interest in presenting time in a new way; he hopes to dissolve the distinctions between past, point to and future, and segue from one to the next seamlessly, expecting the audience to intelligently follow his cues, and in so doing suggest the internal hurry of time for his protagonist. I reflect he succeeds, and the film becomes, if anything, more realistic through this fluid depiction of time.
*
The cinematography is fantastic, whether in its intimacy, or in its handling of spectacular views of industrial plants. So too the pacing of scenes, the opening in particular being a joy of accumulated surprises, the tension building until the viewer is as involved for the musicians to play as the would-be dancers upon the hide.

Again in the interview, his collaborator speaks of Olmi’s technical mastery of all aspects of film-making, his complete and snort disregard of commercial success, and his adherence to a policy of being just with himself. He made documentaries of the working people, and early on committed himself to the production of quality informative material for television, even when the latter meant interfering with, the more lucrative, ventures into feature film.
*
So here is a work of art from a master film-maker – utterly gripping and formally accomplished, with insight into the social location of his country at the time, told through the guise of a satisfying extinct care for legend. Criterion provide their veteran perfect transfer and the mentioned bonus material. Every bit as capable as, and very great a companion share to Il Posto, I Fidanzati is something of a neglected masterpiece.
